NWF #10 New Play

Hello everyone out there in Bloglandia! So as I'm sure you can tell i haven't been updating all that often these past couple of weeks, I wish I could say i had a good reason. I don't uh, I've just been looking for a job (Sort of unsuccessfully) I got a halloween job, but uh, I haven't started yet really, i was supposed to start this past monday, but because of some crap (literally) I start this upcoming monday. Today i have something new, for New Work Fridays, if anything I always wanted to make sure I had something for you guys on fridays, and that's what the story for Shaun's birthday was. i hope you enjoyed it, or at least found it somewhat readable. I came up with a new idea for a play and I plan to write it within the next couple of weeks, I mean really i might be able to punch this thing out in a week, but right now my resolve to do anything isn't that great. Hopefully this job will turn things around, even if just for a bit. So here are a couple of scenes, an amuse-bouche, of the play if you will (Thanks top chef!) hope you like it, let me know what you think, with this especially the last play i wrote I was in a class that I could get feedback from people. so any and all feed back would be great.

Scene 1: Leo @ Work
The booth of a small theatre. There is a light board, sound board, prompt book, etc. We hear someone unlock the booth, Leo enters humming a song. He sets up his prompt book, and leaves little gifts at the boards. Karen enters, she is very upper class, her hair is a bit ridiculous.
Leo: Happy opening Karen!
Karen: Happy opening Leo, now I had a question, one of the actresses told me she was going to be late. What should I do?
Leo: Well, how late?
Karen: She didn't say. She said she gets off work at 8.
Leo: But the show is supposed to start at 8, when did she tell you this?
Karen: Oh, Monday, I believe?
Leo: Karen, it's Friday and you wait until two hours before we open to tell me?
Karen: Well, I thought it would get worked out, these things seem to work themselves out.
Leo: Because I fix them. Crap, uh, ok, well who is it anyway?
Karen: Stephanie, I think?
Leo: Which Stephanie? There are three Stephanies in the show.
Karen: No, no, no, she plays Stephanie in the show, I don't remember her name.
Leo: What? Our lead actress doesn't get off work till 8 on opening night and I'm just finding out about it now?
Karen: Yes, well, happy opening Leo! (she exits) (offstage) Hello boys, Jimmy? Jamal?
Jeremy: I'm Jeremy.
Erica: I'm Erica, and a girl...
Karen: It's not important.
(Jeremy and Erica enter)
Jeremy: She still doesn't know our names? (they start turning things on)
Erica: Or that I'm a girl?
Leo: Don't take it personal, I've only worked here for five years and she still sometimes calls me David. Happy opening guys. On your boards you will find gift bags, a gift card for Starbucks, water balloons, and a pair of movie tickets.
Jeremy: Thanks Leo
Erica: Nice, water balloons (goes to leave)
Leo: Ah, ah, they're for after the show.
Erica: Alright. (sits down)
Leo: Hey, did you guys hear that Melissa was going to be late?
Erica: Oh yeah, she told us on Monday.
Leo: What the hell, how come no one told me?
Jeremy: I told her to tell you something, and you didn't hear this from me, but she said was scared you would flip out on her.
Leo: What? Why would she be afraid of that?
(Joel comes in)
Joel: Hey Leo, Sorry I'm late--
Leo: WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN JOEL?! What excuse does my assistant manager have for me today?
Joel: The bus broke down and--
Leo: If it's not the trolley then it's the bus, Joel, go take care of your stuff. Let me know when you're on headset. Go.
(Joel exits)
Erica: Yeah, I don't know why she would be afraid of you...
Leo: Oh, crap, I'm a dick. (puts on headset) Joel? Joel? … Joel! Hey, uh sorry about yelling at you, both right now and just a second ago, I'm just a little flustered, did you know Mellissa was going to be late today?... Everyone but me! Uh, sorry, well if you look backstage there is a gift bag for you, a bag of saltwater taffy, movie tickets, and a bottle of wine... for after the show.
(Jill enters, Technical Director)
Leo: Hey Jill what's up?
Jill: Hey Leo, Do you know if Karen brought the ax with her? We are missing an ax for the show.
Leo: I will ask. (On headset) Hey Joel, can you ask Karen if she brought the ax? She took it home last night. What? (To Jill) She says she didn't take it home.
Jill: I saw her leave with it.
Leo: Jill says she saw her leave with it. Oh my god, she didn't say anything? (To Jill) She says she left with it but it didn't make it home is what she meant. Crap, uh, we don't have any other axes do we?
Jill: No, a certain someone lost the other three.
Leo: Did you tell Karen?
Jill: She said: “I'm sure they'll turn up”
Leo: Damnit, uh ok, Erica, you're fast right?
Erica: Pretty fast.
Leo: Ok, run across the street and buy one from that hardware store. Jill you have an hour to dull it, can you do it?
Jill: I'm gonna try (she and Erica exit)
Leo: (On headset) Hey Joel, can you see if you can get a hold of Melissa for me? (To Jeremy) Did you do a light check.
Jeremy: yeah
Leo: Ok, great.
(Karen enters)
Leo: Hey Karen, what can I do for you?
Karen: Well, Leo, I have something to talk about with you, are you free?
Leo: Uh, not really, I mean it is opening Karen. I don't really have a lot of time.
Karen: Well, then I can help you there.
Leo: How's that?
Karen: Well do you remember me telling you about our new generous donor?
Leo: Yeah that's how we've been able to replace all the props you've lost.
Karen: Exactly. Well, he had a stipulation for us getting the money.
Leo: Which is?
Karen: Effective immediately, you're fired!
Leo: What the F-?!
BLACKOUT
Scene 2: Leo @ The Apartment
Lights up on Leo, he stands with a box of things.
Leo: I've been fire from the company on opening night. Some asshole donates a shit ton of money and asks for me specifically to be fired. Who would have thought that would be a thing?! Oh, and here's the kicker... the donor? My ex-boyfriend, Bryan Daniel. Bryan with a “y”. That tool. I dated this guy for like six months, and he decides to ruin my life. WHAT THE FUCK?! So now I have no job. Great. I'm sure the roomies will be pleased.
(Lights up on apartment, the sound of twenty cat is heard—his roommates'. Scrawny long-haired Douche and short red-haired Crazy, both in black goth clothing carry a cat each.)
Douche: Oh man, bummer about your job.
Crazy: Yeah, that is so uncool.
Leo: Uh, thanks guys.
Douche: Hey do you want me to go kick that guy's ass? I could totally rip his heart through his chest.
Leo: Uh, I don't think that's possible.
Douche: Maybe not for you.
Leo: Right. Plus, I think that's murder.
Douche: Psh, human laws don't pertain to us, we are better than that. Better than them.
Leo: Right...
Crazy: Hey look at little Shnookums, she's peeing on your bag! So cute!
Leo: Hey what is my bag doing out here? Wait... are all these boxes my stuff? Douche, Crazy, what's going on here?
Crazy: Well when me and Douche found out you lost your job, we decided it was time for you to move out. The cats don't seem to like you all that much.
Douche: And you always seem mad when we eat your food, it's really lame for our Chi.
Leo: Are you kidding me? First of all, I told you from the get-go I didn't like the cats, or want them in my room because I'm allergic to them. Second, I am paid up for this month. I have at least another two weeks. Third, you can't just pack up all of my things. And Finally, of course I got mad when you ate my food. It's my food! I paid for it, I expect to eat it!
Crazy: Your yelling is really uncool.
Douche:Yeah maybe I'll use some karate to shut you up.
Leo: Douche, shut up, just admit you don't know karate. Guys I still have two weeks here, so thanks for making them super awkward.
Crazy: No, we're going to have to ask you to leave tonight. We already changed the locks, and have someone else moving in.
Douche: And you're not on the lease so this is perfectly legal. And I totally know karate. If the cats weren't watching I'd pull your heart out of your chest for your insolence.
Leo: Fuck your cats. They don't give a shit. They're cats! They are not people. Stop treating them like they are people. They do not get votes on movie night. If I have to watch Aristocats one more fucking time I will murder every cat in the world!

(Black out, lights on Leo)
Leo: Apparently threatening cats was too far. They called the cops and I was forcibly removed from the premises. Not before throwing at least one cat in the pool... bastards. So I made a phone call that I;d been dreading for a very long time. (Holds up phone) Hi, mom. (Puts phone down) I called my parents asking if I could move back home. Back home was Wildomar CA. A nice little town that no one really knows, so I tell them Lake Elsinore. They've kinda heard of it. Murrieta also sounds familiar. And Temecula, “Oh that's where all the wineries are”. So that's where I moved back to. Cozy little Wildomar, where meth-labs and cattle are found on the same property. Where there are horse crossing signs, and public transportation is that one bus that comes every five hours. Not to mention my family. This will be... interesting.

NWF #9 Happy Birthday Shaun Part Three: (No Title right now)

OK final part, hope you enjoy!!!

Part Three:
Ninth Floor
The room was a grassy plain, they had seen a room like this before. The one with the man who looked just like Shaun and had tried to kill him. Sarah was astounded, “Are we still inside?” she asked. “Yeah, we've been in a room like this before, there is gonna be some guy here who looks like Shaun who is going to try and kill us, well him.” Nate answered. They looked across the field and saw the door with the skull on in, now to find the man, and the key. They heard the sounds of a horse, it was getting closer, they couldn't see where it was coming from, Shaun realized it was coming from behind. As he turned around he saw him, a man his size wearing his face, he wore a long white coat, with a small light blue cape on the back, he had two letters stitched into his coat, “RX” whatever that meant, wrapped around his head was a light of some sort. He was riding a large horse, he looked old, but one who never stopped working hard, he was brown with a white stripe down the middle of his face, the peculiar thing about this horse was that he had no legs, it was some sort of Phantom Horse. Shaun got out of the way of the Man in White, but Nate was not so lucky, the Man in White grabbed Nate and took him into the sky. Sarah and Shaun ran after them, Shaun an ice spell hoping not to hit Nate, Sarah pulled out some parts from one of her cubes and went to work, this slowed down her chase, but soon she was working on something that would be helpful. Nate was unconscious, and the Man in White pulled out what appeared to be a large capsule, he threw it towards Shaun and Sarah, Shaun lobbed a fireball at it, causing it to explode. Sarah finished her robot, it was a bird made out of the spare parts, it even had rockets and jets attached to it, “Damn Sarah, that was quick!” Shaun said. Sarah didn't have time to take the compliment, she grabbed hold of the bird, and Gina climbed into what appeared to be a mini cock pit. They took off after Nate and the Man in White. Shaun continued his spell casting, switching his target to the Horse just in case he might hit Nate, but seeing as how the Horse was mostly body this didn't help too much. Sarah was fast approaching the Man in White, when he noticed this he took out another capsule and threw it at Sarah, she dodged it but it exploded behind her, throwing her off balance. Nate came to and saw how high in the sky they were, he immediately began to freak out, causing the Man in White to lose his concentration, dropping three capsules, Shaun sent off another fireball and the explosion threw the Man in White and Nate from the Horse, Sarah chased after Nate catching him before he hit the ground, and the Man in White came down with a thud that ended his life, the Phantom Horse disappeared into thin air. Shaun checked the dead body and found more capsules and the key, he picked them up and the body of the Man in White started turning into mist, it just disappeared leaving the clothes behind. The entire Plain disappeared, they were just in a large empty room, Nate and Sarah came over to Shaun, “It was all just an illusion?” Sarah asked.
It couldn't have been it hurt like it was real” Nate retorted.
I'm telling you, this place has got some crazy magic going on, let's go, someone is in the next room.”
Tenth Floor:
The last trap room they were in was filled with the darkness, this time it just seemed like an empty room, where was the trap, where was one of their friends? Shaun was about to take a step, when he heard a voice. “Stop! Don't take a step!” It was DeAndre. “DeAndre? Is that you?” Shan asked.
Yeah, it's me, don't take a step, this trap is crazy, it's invisible, in front of you is a floor switch that will kill me.”
Oh shit, so what do we do?”
uh, great question, I can see you, but you can't see me or the trap. Just listen to me and do whatever I say.”
Alright, tell me what to do.”
Shaun, to your left there is a knob, give it three turns to the left, Nate to your right there is cat, give it a kick-”
What?”
Nate just kick the invisible Cat!”
Nate did what he was told and kicked the air to his right, a cat cried out and he heard it run away.
Sarah, in front of you there is a cage full of Invisible Mice, grab one and put it on the floor in front of you.”
DeAndre, gross, a cage full of mice? Do they have diseases? Are they invisible diseases?”
Sarah, don't be a Nate.”
Hey!”
Sorry Nate.”
Sarah reached in a grabbed a mouse, she couldn't see them, but she could feel them, moving around there must have been at least twenty crammed into a tiny cage. She felt on of them crawl up her arm and had to grab it to put it back. She let the mouse in her hand go at her feet and heard the cat that Nate had kicked earlier go for it, the two ran around the room until the mouse reached a a hole in the wall it sounded like. It must have hit a switch or something because then what sounded like large gears started moving, causing the floor to shift, they rode the floor until Shaun ran into something, it was DeAndre, he was no longer invisible, but he was covered in vines, “De!” he said, reaching out totake the vines off him, “Stop! Shaun, don't touch the vines, or they'll get you too, these are the vines of the Bearing Bison Barnning Bay Bloods, or the 5B. They grab any who touch them and never let them go until they have sucked all the life out of them.” Shaun had dealt with the 5B before, he began casting a spell that started a small blizzard in the room. Sarah and Nate started complaining about the freezing cold temperature, “This is the only way to get rid of the 5B, so deal with it.” They stopped complaining out loud, but still grumbled a little. The cold killed the 5B and Shaun was able to get DeAndre free. He was very weak, Nate had to use three of his potions to get him back to a good health, they were now down to two potions, the next rest stop they were gonna have to buy more. The door unlocked and Shaun and Nate helped DeAndre to his feet. They were about to go through the door when Sarah stopped them. “Hey guys, the stones, remember? We can teleport to floor fifteen, that was the plan.” Shaun and Nate looked at each other “Oh... right...” They had forgotten all about that in the span of one room. They put DeAndre down, “I'm really fine guys, seriously” He said tripping over his own feet into a pile on the floor. Nate helped him back up. “So, how do we use these stones?” Sarah asked, “Great question, uh I'm trying to remember something my history teacher told us, I think there are two ways to get a magical stone artifact to work, you either hit it against something, or you talk to it... I think. And seeing as how I kept hitting mine against another rock to make it like the lens I assume we have to talk to it?”
What the hell are we supposed to say?” DeAndre asked, then added sarcastically, “hey stone we want to go to another floor” the stone in Shaun's hand lit up the room with a light green flash, then brought the light back in to create the form of a small slender woman, wearing men's clothes, large dark glasses, and smoking a cigaret, “What do you want!?” The little woman yelled, “Who called me? You! Big guy! You're the one who kept breaking me apart! And now you want me to take you to another floor!? Ha! You're crazy!” Clearly this small magical woman was not one to be messed with.
Uh, about that, I'm sorry, I was not aware that there was a little magical being living inside of the stone, I thought it was just a normal stone, look, I'm here trying to get all my friends back and we would greatly appreciate it if you could teleport us to level 15.”
And what do you offer as payment!?”
Uh, our gratitude?”
“GRATITUDE!? First you break me and then you have nothing to offer me but Gratitude!? You cabrĂ³n!”
Uh, well how about a health potion?” Nate said, trying to save the situation.
Potions you say? How many?”
uh, we have two... but-”
I will take them! Two potions to move five floors” A hole appeared in the ground, “Put the potions in the hole, one at a time” Nate reluctantly gave away their last two potions, it was the only option, but no one was really happy about it, what were they going to give her next time?
Ok, here we go, to floor fifteen!!!!!” the bright green light filled the room again and took the party with it.
Fifteenth Floor
The room filled with light and when it was gone Shaun, DeAndre, Nate, and Sarah left in it's wake, the stone back to being just a stone. They searched around and found Jon sitting in the center of the room on a stone, playing his guitar, he saw his friends and called out to them, “Hey guys!” Everyone was super excited to see him, but when he tried to go over to them there was a puff of white smoke and suddenly there were two Jons, and two rocks. He didn't notice, and tried to leave the rock again, only it caused more white smoke, and more Jons to appear. “hold on guys, something's wrong, I can't leave this rock.”
Jon, which one are you?” Shaun asked, Jon looked confused, “What do you mean 'Which one am I?' I'm right here.” He made to leave the rock again, and now there were eight Jons. “Jon, stop it, this is a trick, every time u try and leave the rock you multiply.” Sarah told him.
Really how many are there of me?” The Jons said in unison.
Eight right now.”
Hello seven other mes!” The real Jon said, the other seven said “Hi Jon” back in unison. It creeped everyone out, but now they knew which was the real Jon. Shaun approached him and grabbed his hand, pulling him free of the stone, and making all of the other Jons disappear. “That coulda been disastrous, imagine the room filling with Jons, we coulda been crushed.” Nate said.
Well we weren't, we're all ok, even I'm feeling better” DeAndre remarked. Jon came over and hugged everyone glad to see everyone's faces, him and DeAndre related the stories of what had happened to them right before they wound up in their respective trap rooms, Shaun Sarah and Nate filled them in on the rest of the details. They got ready to teleport to the next floor, Nate pulled out the lens that he had on him and talked to the stone, “Stone, we would like to teleport to the twentieth floor.” The stone lit up and the same small woman appeared, you want to teleport again huh? Well, too bad, you can't”
Why not?” Shaun asked.
“Well for starters, you are not done in this room, the trap has not been dismantled, and second-”
What? We got Jon back, what's left of the trap?” Shaun asked.
That was only one part, how many copies did he make?”
Uh, seven copies”
Well, they each took a part of his soul, you have to get them back and I will tell you your next obstacle to teleporting.” They all looked around the room, but couldn't see any of the copies, Sarah looked to the ceiling and saw one, he was hanging from the wall like a gecko, he turned around and she saw that his eyes glowed an unearthly purple. “Whoah!” Was all she got out before the copy jumped for her, she pulled out a shield made of parts and blocked him, but she was now trapped under her own shield. The other copies began to fall out of the sky and each member of the group had to deal with one each, some of them two. Nate pulled his dagger and knocked one out with the hilt of it, another came for him and he made a dash for the other side of the room. One was trying to ride on DeAndre, but he was used to drunk people trying that and subdued the copy. Shaun caught two in an ice spell and they were knocked out. Jon made a large pole out of some sound waves from his guitar and smashed it upside the head of the last copy. One was still of course terrifying Sarah, so Shaun knocked him out with a bolt spell. Nate dragged the last copy to the center, when they were all brought back together they turned into a mist and became a part of Jon. The stone light up from inside Nate's pocket, he took it out, the small woman appeared again, “Great job, now the door is open to the next room, however u still cannot teleport,”
“Why not?”
Because there are too many of you, in my current state I can only teleport four of you, one of you will have to go back to a Rest Room. Who will go forward?” She asked looking at Shaun. He didn't want to choose, they all worked great as a team, but maybe someone wanted a break? He sort of did, but he didn't have a choice to stay behind, Death was waiting for him at the top of the tower. Nate stepped forward, “I'll wait, I've been here since floor one, maybe give someone else a chance to help? I'm pretty pooped.” Shaun knew Nate wanted to go forward, he wanted to see it out to the end, but everyone else was much fresher than him or Nate, so Nate would stay behind. Shaun, Jon, DeAndre, and Sarah would go to the twentieth floor and get Guy. The stone asked for payment, and no one really had anything to give, Nate offered up his dagger, she accepted and the light took everyone away, leaving Nate to make his way to the Rest Room alone, without a weapon.
Twentieth Floor
They reached the twentieth floor in a bright light, and immediately everyone missed Nate, there was a moment of somberness, that was broken by Guy's voice. “Hey guys! Finally! Shit, took you long enough. What was that light? Future me came and got me out of the trap, I like future me, he is definitely looking out for my best interests, I don't like past me though, he's always wanting me to do shit for him. Like, look man, can't you take care of some things yourself? Why's everyone so quiet? Hey where's Nate? Oh no, did he die? Nate! Nate! WHY!???”
Guy, calm down, Nate's fine, he's back in one of the Rest Rooms” Shaun sarcastically comforted Guy.
Oh, ok, well good, so what's the next step?”
Well we have to go two floors to recharge the teleporting stone, so we go to the next floor, oh but before that we need you to go back in time, and tell the past me about a shortcut, tell him to ask the Invisible Man, I'll know what you mean.”
There's an Invisible man? I wanna see him.”
I know, just go Guy, also you might want to check out your past self in this trap.”
Alright, damn past self, always wantin shit.” Guy disappeared in a blue time portal and the door opened for the group to go to the next floor.
Twenty-first Floor
The door opened and Shaun, Jon, Sarah and DeAndre found themselves on a boat in the middle of the ocean, Damn, this place really can be anything can't it? Shaun thought. “Where is the key? And the door?” asked Jon. They split up to search for it, DeAndre was having a hard time stabilizing himself on the ship just held onto the side railing, he looked over, and found the door, it was int eh ocean, floating in the waves. “Hey guys, I found the door!” he shouted. Everyone came to look, “But where could that key be?” Sarah asked, she got her answer, a piece of bird shit fell out of the sky and hit her in the face, she started freaking out, everyone else looked up and saw a giant bird perch atop the ship, and Shaun saw that tied to his left foot, was the key. “You have got to be kidding me” Shuan said. “Guys, no sweat, I'm great with birds, I got a ton of songs to put birds to sleep!” Jon said. He started strumming his guitar, as he lulled the bird to sleep Shaun started climbing up towards the bird. Sarah was cleaning her face and most of her upper body in a nearby barrel, she looked down and saw a large cloud in the water, she could see electricity jumping in the cloud, she became alarmed and tried to put the cover on the barrel. The storm cloud fought her and finally escaped the barrel, creating a large thunder storm, heavy rains, and winds that howled, blocking out the sounds of Jon's guitar. The giant bird woke up and saw Shaun getting close to it, he pecked and scratched at Shaun, who fought back with a fire spell. The bird knocked it away with it's wing, barely getting a scratch on it. It began to fly away, if it got away that would mean they would be trapped in this storm and this room. DeAndre pulled out a boomerang and threw it towards the bird, missing the foot, but he managed to get the bird to change direction and it flew back towards the boat. Sarah pulled out her shotgun and fired it at the bird, it was stronger than she anticipated and she went flying back, but she did manage to hit the birds wing, injuring it, forcing it to land back on the boat. Jon was trying to use the soundwaves from his guitar, but the air was so cluttered with rain and wind that he couldn't make anything, the bird came towards him, and he ran straight towards it, at the moment it struck out at him he used the wet floor to slide between the beasts legs and grab the key. “I've got the key!” he yelled to everyone, they made their way to the door, only to find that in the storm it has disappeared, Shaun knew he had to quiet the storm, he raised his hand to the sky “You shall storm no more!” he yelled with the power of five storms, and the storm cloud started shaking and made it's back into the barrel Sarah had found it, as if the entire sky had escaped into this one barrel. The bird was still a problem for the group though, but Jon set out to fix that, he played it a lullaby rocking it to sleep. It took a minute and Sarah's shotgun was knocked over board, but after about ten minutes it was very docile, and Jon helped to bandage up it's wing, it gave Jon a bottle of some gold liquid as a thanks. Shaun was beat, quieting a storm is no easy feat, for any sort of Mage, and now here he was with still another room to go, and unsure of when the next Rest Room would appear, he didn't even know if he could cast any spells for awhile. He asked for a sword from DeAndre, he would have to use it if he couldn't cast magic. Things were going to get bad fast if he couldn't get some blue potion in him soon. The door reappeared and they all jumped into the water, Jon opened it and water started flooding in, taking all four of them in it.
Twenty-second Floor
The water came rushing in, and the party crashed onto the floor all wet. “Well that was one of the less nice ways to go through a door” DeAndre said, “Try going through a door on a whale” Shaun said. They looked around, “Oh shit,” Shaun knew what sort of room this was, there was grass as far as the eye could see a giant plain, in between them and the door on the opposite side of the room, two large men, they slowly turned around, one in a brown suit that looked too small for a man his size, his mustache and goatee were dark, his hair slick, he carried a cleaver, and the other man, unkempt, in green, he looked very physical, and was massaging a black panther, around each man's wrist was a key, they needed both of them. Neither man said a thing, and started towards the group. “Jon and Sarah you take the Man in Brown, and me and De will take the Man in Green, ok? Go!” Shaun shouted out, the two teams split up, Sarah and John immediately set to work building things, Jon built a sword for himself out of a G Chord, while Sarah began building Mech Armor, she was already at her waist. “Jon, I need more time, hold him off” Sarah ordered, “Got it!” he ran towards the Man in Brown and went in for an attack with his sword, the man blocked it with his cleaver and sent Jon flying with a kick. He landed and just started back towards him again, this time throwing his sword towards the Man in Brown, he prepared to block it, but Jon pulled out his guitar and played a few notes, this caused his sword to break apart into five different swords that flew at the man, he was able to dodge three, with one hitting him in the leg, just merely breaking skin. The other one was really the only sword Jon cared about, it was aimed right for his left hand, to which the key was attached, and hit it's target with such precision that it cut the hand clean from the arm, leaving the key to slide off into the grass. Sarah yelled, “Out of the way Jon!” her armor was done, and it was her turn to take on the Man in Brown. He ran towards her, hardly affected by the fact that his left hand was lying in the grass feet from where he stood. Sarah armor made her about the same size as the Man in Brown and about as strong, she hoped, he came towards her, and she grabbed him, throwing him to the ground, but he grabbed her at the last minute taking her with him, they rolled around, he didn't even notice the cuts from rolling around with Sarah's machinery. He got the upper hand and layed on top of her, he pulled his cleaver up high, ready to bring it down upon Sarah, “Oh fuck that noise” She said and a two rockets appeared from each of her shoulders, and the Man in Brown was hit by four mini rockets, knocking him into the air and exploding, what was left of him after was not getting back up.
Shaun and DeAndre took on the Man in Green and his Panther. Shaun went after the Man in Green, he tried to lob a fireball, but it was weak, he wasn't ready to be casting magic, Worth a shot, he thought to himself while he pulled out the sword DeAndre gave him. DeAndre ran at full speed at the Panther, he had dealt with many a wild cat before, but this one was different, he could sense something dark about it. He fired off two arrows towards it and it disappeared, reappearing on the other side of the room, he fired again, and again it teleported. He ran towards it, it fired off three balls made of the same darkness that the group had encountered in other parts of the tower. DeAndre shot three arrows imbued with light magic to counteract the three shadow balls. The Panther took this opportunity to come up behind DeAndre and attack him from behind, latching onto his lower half, DeAndre bucked wildly, and use his boomerang like a dagger and managed to get the Panther off just before it teleported again, this time coming at him from the front. He dodged and saw that far off the field was on fire from the small fire ball that Shaun had tried to use against the Man in Green, he ran towards it, the panther teleporting behind him trying to catch him. As he ran the Panther would appear out of nowhere and try and attack, missing DeAndre by inches. He finally made it to the fire and the Panther teleported to attack, but this time it was DeAndre who was attacking, he grabbed an arrow and as the Panther appeared he stabbed it through the chest, the beast fought wildly, but DeAndre had the upper hand, he threw the beast into the now roaring fire, where it screamed and turned into a cloud of the darkness, disappating into the air.
Shaun had his sword in hand and went to strike the Man in Green, but he was quick and strong with his hands, stopping the blade with just his hands. He tossed the blade to the side and grabbed Shaun, throwing him to the ground. He took out a glove covered in metal plating and proceeded to attack Shaun, who rolled out of the way of the Man's might punch. Unfortunately Shaun was not quick enough and the Man in Green kicked him in his gut, Shaun felt the pain in his stomach, but no time to think, otherwise he would be dead, he grabbed the mans boot that was firmly placed into his gut and pulled the man off balance, Shaun saw the sword not too far from where they were, he sent a fist flying into the Man's jaw, knocking him to the ground. Shaun rushed over to the sword, as the Man in Green approached, now filled with more anger than ever, Shaun dug the sword into the ground knocking dirt into the air, and into the Man in Green's eyes. He stumbled for a second trying to see again, but it was too late, Shaun had sliced open his stomach, having all of his innards spill out onto the floor. “Shaun, that's gross,” Sarah yelled from across the room, having seen the end of the fight. The Man in Green then turned into a mist and left the Key in his wake, the door was now able to be opened and they could teleport to the twenty-fifth floor. Shaun pulled out his stone and spoke to it, “Uh, hey stone, can you take us to the twenty-fifth floor?”
“Real elegant Shaun” Jon joked.
The green light appeared and so did the little woman, “Well well well, here we are almost to the end eh? So what you got to trade? What you gonna offer me?” They all looked at each other the only things they really had left on them were their weapons and the keys, “How about the two keys we won from the two men here?” Shaun asked.
“Why would I want those keys? They are useless outside of this tower, what else?”
“Uh we have our weapons, what if you take one?” Sarah chimed in offering her pistols.
“What use do I have with your weapons? I couldn't sell them to anyone, I couldn't use them, no!”
Then Jon remembered the gift from the Giant Bird. “I have this bottle of strange gold liquid I got from that Giant Bird in the last room?”
The little woman eyed the bottle and lost it, “Ai Dios Mio!!! Where did u get that!!??? It's worth a fortune!!! Yes give it to me!!!”
“Wait a minute, that's worth a fortune? Don't give her all of it Jon” Shaun said.
“I need it! I am but a poor woman, please sir, I am but a humble magic being salesperson, that gold liquid would go very far, and if you want me to teleport you I want that gold liquid!”
“So humble” Shaun mumbled, “Look, we really need you to teleport us, but we also really need this liquid if it is worth so much, can't we strike a deal?”
“Ok, fine, we split it, sixty-forty!”
“Ok, We get the sixty! Now, to the twenty-fifth floor!” before she even realized what she agreed to the little woman teleported the group.
Twenty-fifth Floor
They appeared on the twenty-fifth floor and checked his bottle, only forty percent of the liquid was missing, she was bound by the agreement. “Alright, everyone keep your eye out for Bailey, she is the only one we have left to find.” Shaun said, they searched the room, but couldn't find any trace of her. They split up DeAndre found himself walking up a flight of stairs, he saw Bailey at the top, he turned around and shouted, “I found her!” but there was no response, he called out to her, “Bailey” no response. He ascended the stairs, but he found as he got closer Bailey kept getting higher, so he ran after her, climbing higher and higher, and never getting anywhere. He called out to her again, but nothing, Bailey just looked at DeAndre and smiled.
Sarah found herself at the edge of a pool of water, she saw that at the bottom of the pool there was a glass coffin, inside it, was Bailey. “Hey guys, she's over here!” But she didn't hear anyone. She made a small submarine out of the parts in her belt, and dove in the lake. As she reached the bottom she felt something swim past her and rock the sub, she looked over and a large octopus was guarding the glass coffin, “Mother fuck.”
Jon walked through the dark looking for Bailey, he saw something up in the distance, it was her, “Bailey!” He called out, she turned around, held up a finger as if telling Jon to be quiet, smiled and ran off into the darkness, Jon followed after her.
Shaun walked through the darkness and found himself in a bright forest, he came to a clearing, and there was Bailey, asleep it seemed, she was wrapped it seemed by vines, it wasn't until he got closer that he realized that some of the vines seemed to be plugged into her, the vines were attached to her head they seemed to be feeding off her. He didn't have time to call for the others, he ran over to her, but a vine came out of a bush and grabbed him, he pulled out his sword and hacked it off, at that moment the rest of the forest seemed to come alive and take note of Shaun, and it was coming for him. The sun was blocked out by leaves and vines, all headed for Shaun, he didn't have any magic to help him, he dodged and hacked away at what he could, inching his way towards Bailey while the vines began shooting needles at him.
DeAndre was so tired from running, but he needed to help Bailey, suddenly she stopped moving, DeAndre was able to reach her, and as he reached out for her she became a gnarled mesh of vines and leaves, “What the?” DeAndre got out before the vines grabbed onto him, he used his boomerang to cut himself free and ran down the stairs, away from what seemed like part of a forest that was chasing him down the stairs.
Sarah was trying to use some robotic arms she had made for the Sub to fight off the octopus, as soon as she had it subdued, it disappeared, everything did, the water, the Glass Coffin, all that remained was a bush, where Bailey was. She got out of the sub and approached it, she reached out to touch it and a vine grabbed her, lifting her into the air. Gina leapt into action, turning her small arms into spinning blades, freeing Sarah who rode the vines all they way down as Gina provided cover, Sarah ran back towards the center of the room and the guys.
Through the darkness Jon followed Bailey until he reached a forest, he heard a commotion, it sounded like Shaun, he looked and saw that the entire forest was basically attacking Shaun. He as quickly and as quietly as he could made six large blades and sent them spinning through the air, and using a few loud notes split them into thirty six blades, slashing through most of the forest, Shaun grabbed his sword and cut Bailey out of the bed she was attached to, “Run!” Shaun shouted at Jon, they ran back the way Shaun came, with Bailey in his arms. Jon fired off some more swords as they ran, the forest was now after both of them, hopefully they could find a way to disable the trap.
DeAndre made it to level floor and ran into Sarah, Jon and Shaun with Bailey soon approached, they all said “The plants are alive!” Just then the three large plants came crashing through and the four of them ducked, letting the vines and barbs crash into each other, a giant bulb emerged and blossomed into a giant yellow flower. “NO TAKE WOMAN” it shouted. This woke Bailey up, she looked up at Shaun and for the first time he realized that she had something clutched in her hands, it was a bottle of blue potion, “Bottoms up” she said and handed it to him, he set her down and drank the potion. He felt magic coursing through his veins again, he alone took on the giant yellow flower. It shot poison stingers at him, he annihilated them with a wave of fire. He swung his arms high and wide and from one fireball a tornado of fire was created, he sent it crashing towards the flower, decimating it, and burning most of the rest of the forest in the room. A door was heard unlocking and the plants and vines turned into mist disappearing. “Bailey are you ok?” Sarah asked, she seemed a bit woozy, but said “I'm good, those plants took a lot out of me.” Shaun cast a healing spell on her and she regained some of her color, but now all of his magic was gone again.
“We've got one room left, Death is waiting for me in there, and I'm in no condition to fight, that spell just took up the last of my magic.”
“Did I hear someone say Invisible Man?” His voiced appeared out of nowhere. It freaked most of them out, Shaun was just a bit annoyed.
“No, no one said that.”
“Well you should have, and oh look you found all your little friends, oh and see I knew you were missing a horse!”
DeAndre was offended, “I'm not a fucking horse!”
“Well whatever, anyway, congratulations! Are you ready for the final battle with Death?”
“No, look at me, I have no magic, I've got cuts, scars, and bruises. I'd be no match for Death right now. Do you have anything that can help? I know you've got some sort of bag with you, wait, why are you here anyway?”
“I'm here to make on final Rest Room for you before you fight the big baddie upstairs.”
“Great! Ok, potions, both Blue and Red please!”
“Sorry all out! You can't see it, but my face is showing that I am very much sorry for that.”
“Do you have anything?”
“Well since this is now an official Rest Room you can summon the Mole Merchant, just tap your foot three times.”
Shaun did so, he felt like an idiot, but did it, they needed potions. The ground started shaking where he tapped, and he moved out of the way as the Mole Merchant made her way up from the ground, she looked awfully familiar. Shaun noticed it first, “You're the woman from the stones!! That made us pay for teleportation! But how?”
“I am a very busy very humble magic salesperson, remember? I am Claudia the Mole Merchant Lady, what would you like to buy?”
Shaun was amazed, she was definitely the woman from the stones, and here she was in the flesh. Shaun bought a red potion each for them, and two blues for himself. Then the Mole Merchant threw in three free red potions, because she liked their faces so much. She bid them farewell, and left through the hole she left in the ground. “Ok guys, this is the final battle, are you ready? I wish Nate and Guy could be here to help, but we are going to have make due.”
“Well not necessarily,” The Invisible Man chimed in, “You see you are technically in a Rest Room, and because Nate and Guy are in a Rest Room further down the tower they can be brought here, isn't that nice?” He snapped his fingers, or Shaun assumed he snapped his fingers, and in a puff of white smoke Guy and Nate appeared. Sarah made a dagger for Nate to use since he had given his up to get the party teleported. “Everyone ready?” Shaun asked, everyone nodded yes, and they stepped through the final door.
Twenty-sixth Floor (Final Floor)
They all got inside the room and shut the door, it was dark, Nate and Shaun pulled out their lenses and looked around for a sign of something, “No need for those boys” Said a voice. The room lit up with torches all around the perimeter they made a trail to the center of the room, where they lit upwards, a staircase, one by one, until they reached the top. Where an old man sat in a stone throne. They all recognized him, and were shocked, it was their old mentor, their old friend who started their guild, they named the Guild after him, it was Peter of the family Larlham! “Surprised eh?” he said as he started down the staircase. “I died you know, and I floated through nothingness for what seemed like an eternity, then Death brought me out of it, and told me that if I so wanted I could become the new Death, I would be his successor, they changed Deaths every 200 years or so, and I was chosen. Well, I thought what better way to test and see my dear old friends again then by having them challenge my tower! Well, did you like it?” They were all in shock, how could this be? Peter was chosen as the new death? He was TESTING them? That's all this was? “Peter,” Shaun spoke first, “This was all just a test? We were in real danger a lot of the time, I mean each trap room alone, and thos men who looked like me! The monsters and the Darkness, this was all a test?”
Yes, the ultimate test! Shaun my boy, you of all people should understand, you were the one who wanted to go on a real adventure again weren't you? Well I heard your desire and thought I could help you out and prepare you for what lies ahead. So I devised this test, isn't it grand?”
Grand!? Peter you are crazy! This is... this is a bit too much right now.”
Well snap out of it because you have your final test right now, a battle with me!” With that the lights went out and when they came back on Peter had transformed into Death, a large robed and hooded figure, half man half skeleton, carrying a large sickle. “Get ready Guild Larlham!”
Peter struck out and almost caught Sarah, who was still in shock, “Sarah, get over it, this is a fight to the death!” Peter yelled out at her, she immediately set to work on a machine. Guy began shooting his lazer at Peter, who reflected it off his sickle, Guy jumped into a portal, Peter almost caught his foot with his blade. Bailey pulled out her sword, but couldn't bring herself to fight, Shaun told her, “Bailey I don't want to do it either, but this is what he wants, we have to do it for him!” The attacked together, he enchanted her giant sword and she sliced through Peter cutting him in half. A tear fell from her eyes, but she soon realized that the halves of peter became whole again, and came after her. DeAndre shot a couple of arrows in Peter's direction, peter shot out some shadow that tied his legs up and his arms constricting them. Nate had made some bombs in his time in the Rest Room, and lit them, throwing them at Peter, they exploded but barely did any damage. Peter sent out a wave of dark enchanted fire, it sent Nate flying and burned holes through his shirt. Jon had been busy making a large golem made out of sound waves and sent it after Peter, it got in one punch before Peter sliced in half. He then sent the sound waves back towards Jon, knocking him out. One by one they all tried to fight, but found themselves unable to really do any damage, and mostly it had to do with that it was Peter Larlham. Their friend and mentor, the one who taught them most of their skills. Shaun didn't want to see his friends suffer anymore and used a large portion of his magic to cast a time spell to freeze time. He looked and everyone was suffering in suspended animation, he unfroze Peter and said “ok, just you and me, it's my fault we're all here so just you and me.” Peter agreed and the he came flying towards Shaun, who ducked out of the way, he turned around and put all of his strength into a spell Peter had taught him years ago, before his death, he never used it beacause Peter told him that he should only use it when he was sure the time is right, he would only be able to use it once. He knew that this was that time. The spell created a large ball of light that tore through Peter's chest, it began to eat away at his cloak and being, Shaun felt terrible, but Peter just looked at him and smiled. “You are ready for what lies ahead, you have grown so much, I am proud” END

NWF #8: Happy Birthday Shaun, Pt. 2: Shaun Rosten and the Chambers of Bitch Fits

Here is part two of Shaun's birthday present. This thing is turning out longer than I expected, but I hope people enjoy it. Next week will be part three!

Part Two:
Ground Floor
The door closed behind them, Nate checked it, “It's locked.” It wasn't like they were leaving anytime soon, so it wasn't too big of a concern for Shaun at the moment. He tried to get the layout of the room, but it was pitch black, save for their torch. The darkness seemed to be fighting the torch, and winning, it barely gave off any light. “Can you see anything?” Shaun asked Nate, forgetting that Nate's eyes get worse in the dark. “No, everything is just dark, I think it's actually a mist or something, like a dark cloud.” Shaun took a step forward, and heard the sound of glass breaking, he looked down at his feet and saw a pair of glasses, with dark lenses. He saw another pair, they were probably meant for the two of them, he had stepped on the smaller of the two pairs, the one meant for Nate. “Dammit Shaun, watch where you're going” Nate complained.
How was I supposed to know that there would be glasses on the floor? How could I possibly think that would be a thing that would happen in here? I only broke one pair, there's still another so calm down.” Shaun picked up the good pair and put them on, the haze seemed to be thinning, there was a green light flashing from the other side of the room, Shaun could faintly make out a door. “Over there, the exit's over there, easy.” Shaun and Nate started walking towards the exit when they heard a low moan, “What was that?” asked Nate. “I don't know, just keep walking, we're almost there.” Shaun whispered back trying to listen. The light in the glasses was getting brighter and closer, he could better make out the shape of the door, he made out a symbol on the door, a skull with a hole in the forehead. What is that? The moaning was getting louder, Shaun ignored it, they were so close, he was reaching out to the door handle.
Shaun, seriously, what is that noise, it's freaking me out.”
Nate stop overreacting, we're almost at the exit,” Nate had a tendency to do that, it didn't matter what was moaning they would soon leave it back in the room. Shit, what if it's locked, well, Nate has his stupid lack pick. He reached out and tried to turn the knob, locked. “Nate pick this lock.”
What? Shaun, it's pitch black, I can't see shit, how am I supposed to pick a lock I can't see?”
Wear the glasses”
They were made for a big human, I am a Dwarf, I can only see out of one lens at a time.”
Well I'll hold the fire really close, just do it”
Nate tried but the glasses kept falling, the fire was being dimmed by the cloud of darkness in the room, and he just couldn't get it open. “Shaun, this isn't gonna work. We need to find a key.”
Where do you see a key Nate?”
Nate looked around the room, and saw a small light all the way on the other side of the room, back where they started, it was a key with a skull and a hole in the forehead, just like the door. “Over there, on the other side of the room, holy shit!” Nate could now make out what was making that moaning sound, there were people, well, people like shapes in the darkness. They just stood there, reaching out towards Shaun and Nate, they had walked past them the entire way here and never noticed them, and now they had to walk back to the other side to get a damn key that they never saw. Nate was not happy with the situation, “There's things out there, they were the one's moaning, holy shit we walked right past them.” Nate was not one to be happy about dealing with the undead, there wasn't much he could do to them, he had a little dagger, and his potions he saved for himself and his party members. Shaun on the other hand, was pretty great about dealing with them, his spells were strong enough to deal with many at once, “Nate, calm down, I've got plenty of spells for a situation like this” as he held his hand high and began casting a spell something caught it. He looked up and a giant metal cuff was around his wrist, a giant smiley face painted on it, it lifted him into the air. “uh, ok, second plan, I'll cover you, go get the key Nate!” Shaun yelled down.
Are you kidding me? What about all the Zombies?”
Just go Nate, I can't reach it from here, so you have to do it!”
Fine!” He was even less happy then before, but he was more freaked out than anything. Nate began walking across the room, it seemed much larger than the last time. He tried to be as quiet as possible, but Shaun yelled out “Hurry up Nate!” the zombies heard this and turned around, one looked directly at Nate. Shaun couldn't see anything, but he heard Nate yell “Oh shiiiiiiiit!” he could make out a little bit the light from the torch, it made patterns in the darkness from Nate running around in it. “Oops” Shaun said. He saw the fire stop moving for a second, and prayed they didn't get Nate. “I've got the key, now help me! Shoot a giant fireball in my direction, I'll duck, just do it!” He did as he was told and shot a giant fireball towards Nate, he tried to aim it a little higher, to make sure to avoid Nate. There was an explosion and the little flame from the torch ran across the room, it was Nate, he unlocked the door with the key and the device released Shaun. He fell, looked up at Nate, and laughed, Nate's eye brows were missing. “Fuck you” Nate said, pulling his hood over his forehead. The door opened and flooded the room with light, Nate and Shaun stepped into it, the door closed behind them.
Second Floor
They looked around, and thought something was wrong, how could they be inside? This “room” was actually a huge field filled with nature, it was a plain as far as the eye could see. They could feel the warmth of the sun on their faces, the wind blowing in their hair, they could see it in the grass. “This is some very powerful magic, how did we get here?” asked Nate.
I don't know, and where is the door? Are we on the second floor now?”
Hey, there is someone over there, maybe it's someone we know.” Nate said, but Shaun knew better. The note that Nate had supposedly written had said that every five floors one of their friends would be found, this was the second room they had visited, even if this was the second floor it wouldn't make sense that they would find someone from their Guild. “Nate, be careful, I don't think that's anyone we know.” Shaun yelled after Nate who was running over to the person. Nate got closer and didn't recognize the figure. It was a tall man, about Shaun's size, in fact he even looked like Shaun. Something was strange about him, he wore all black, pants, a shirt, and a jacket, he had short hair. He was just sitting in the middle of this field, looking forward, as if waiting for them to get there. Nate got close and said, “Excuse me? Hello?” the man's ears twitched, but no other movement was seen. Nate went around to his front, he didn't even look at Nate. Nothing fazed him, until Shaun approached and said “So? Who-” before Shaun even got to finish the man pulled a knife out of his jacket and slashed at Shaun, ripping the sleeve on his robes. “Whoa, what the fuck?” was all Shaun could get out before he was attacked again, this time getting out of the way completely. The man never said a thing, he didn't make any sounds, he didn't even seem to be breathing. Shaun was quick to set up a shield spell between himself and his attacker. The Man in Black seemed to know what it was because he stopped attacking at that moment and pulled out something else from his coat, it was a key, but where was the door? The Man in Black pointed to an area across the field, and a door appeared, with the skull on it, just like the last room. The Man in Black tied the Key around his wrist and gave a “come on” motion to Shaun.
Nate, he's got the key, we gotta get it from him” Shaun yelled.
Are you crazy? That guy is going to kill us!”
I think he only wants me, look, I'll cast a speed spell to make you even faster, then I will get him to attack me, are you ready?”
Shit, fine!”
Shaun cast a speed spell on Nate, he had a golden glow now and moved much faster than your average thief, which was fast already. “ok, Go!” yelled Shaun as he took down his shield and began to fire spells at the man, drawing his attention. The Man in Black ran for Shaun with his knife out, reaching into his jacket for something, it was a bomb, he lit it with a fire ball he had just dodged and threw it at Shaun, who shot a fire spell at it, causing a massive explosion in the middle of the field. While the Man in Black was distracted Nate went in for the key, the Man in black was shielding himself from the debris of the explosion and was holding his arms in front of his face, where the key was attached. Nate grabbed it and took off, the Man in Black nearly cutting Nate with his knife. “Got it!” Nate yelled as he made for the door, “Come on Shaun!” The Man in Black followed after Nate, as did Shaun, who was firing spells at the same time. The Man in Black took out another bomb, but in the time that he took to light it Shaun had cast an Ice spell at him, it hit him and he was stuck, frozen in ice. Shaun ran for the door and Nate had already got it unlocked, they looked back at the man, he had broken one arm free of the ice, and opened the door. Water came crashing over Shaun and Nate, it pulled them into the next room.
Third Floor
Shaun looked around, he didn't see a top to this water, they were seemingly just in endless water. He saw Nate struggling to hold his breath and waved his hands around Nate's face, creating a block of air that pushed the water away from his face, and created one for himself as well. “Oh god, thanks” Nate said breathing heavily, “That guy was crazy, it was weird, it's like he was waiting for you, he hardly moved when I was right next to him, then u come and say one thing and he attacks.”
Yeah, I don't know what that was about.”
What was weird is that he looked like you.”
What do you mean, like he looked similar to me, like we could be related?”
No, like he looked, just like you, he could have been you”
Weird. Well, we're here now, so let's keep an eye out for a key, and a door.”
Right.”
They swam straight ahead, really unsure of just about everything in this room. How were they going to find a door in what seemed like a giant expanse of water, which way was up, which was down? Shaun tried going upside down, but the gravity of it all seemed the same, he was just as comfortable this way as the other, it all seemed natural. The biggest question of course was how were they going to find a key in all this water? The answer unfortunately was right above them. Shaun looked up and saw a large whale swimming above them, and attached to its tail, was the skull key.
Hey Nate, how fast a swimmer are you?” Shaun asked, with a shit eating grin across his face, Nate knew what that meant, it meant he was chasing the whale. “God dammit Shaun, first I have to make my way through a group of undead, then grab a key off some deadly assassin or something, and now I have to chase a whale?” Shaun's only response was “Yes.” Nate had no answer, he really didn't want to, but he was the fastest person in the group, especially when it came to swimming. “Look, I'll even give you a push with a spell.” Before Nate had time to respond Shaun was in the process of casting a spell, Nate turned toward the whale and braced himself for the push. It came immediately and Nate shot off like a rocket being propelled by the water. He was right behind the whale swimming after it, when the whale brought down it's tail creating a huge wave of water that shot Nate back towards Shaun. “Well, that didn't quite go as planned” Shaun said.
No, no it didn't, what are we supposed to do now?”
What about an ice spell? To stop it's tail?”
Will that work? Wouldn't the whale just stop swimming and sink? How are we supposed to get a key from a sinking whale Shaun?”
Well, do u have any better ideas?”
No, not really.”
Ok, I'm going to shoot you back over there, then I'm freezing the tail, u had better grab that key as fast as you can before it starts to sink and take you with it”
Wait, what-” It was too late, Shaun had already shot Nate off with a spell. He zoomed back over to the whale, as it's tail came down a small ice shard hit it and engulfed it in ice, stopping the tail from moving, and thus stopping the whale in it's tracks, Nate swam as fast as he could and saw the key. Unfortunately, the key was also frozen, Shit! You've got to be kidding me Shaun! He thought as he pulled out his knife and started hacking away at the ice, he almost got the key out when the whale started sinking, and fast. Nate was going down with the whale, but he needed to get the key out, he had barely fished the key out of the ice when a wave of water, sent from Shaun, crashed against him and knocked him away from the tail with key in hand. He was safe, except that he found the door, it was on the top of the whale. “Shaun, the door is on the whale!” he yelled.
Crap, what!?” Shaun fired off a wave of water pushing him towards the whale, he needed to get that ice off of it's tail. He got right next to it's tail and used a fire spell, of course they were under water so it just made the water around his hands very hot. He put his hands to the ice and it started to melt. Nate swam after Shaun and the whale as fast as he could, just as Shaun had freed the whale enough for it to swim. It stopped sinking and Nate put the key into the door, Shaun came over and Nate opened the door, the water drained into the door and pulled them through.
Fourth Floor
The door opened and Shaun and Nate came spilling out with a good amount of water before the door closed magically behind them. They laid on the floor in a pool of water for a good five minutes before taking in their surroundings, what could this room hold for them? This would be room number four, or was it the fourth floor, there wasn't really anything telling them that they were moving up the Pillar of Death. They seemed to be in a small cave, there were candles lighting up the place, a little table sat in the middle of the room, it had a red table cloth and a small bell, with a note, “Ring for Assistance” next to it. “Should we ring it?” Nate asked, “It could be a trap” Shaun said.
But there isn't anything else here.”
Well then ring it.”
“But what if it's a trap like you said?”
Then don't ring it.”
“Well, we don't really have a lot of options here, either we ring it or we don't ring it.”
Ok, so choose”
Shaun, you're the leader, you chose”
I don't care either way, I am leaving the decision up to you”
But what if it's a trap?'
“But what if it isn't?”
Nate was very frustrated and decided not to argue anymore, he grabbed the bell and rang it. Nothing happened. “Well, what was the point of that?” Nate said. “Hello, how can I help you?” said a voice that was familiar to Shaun, it was the Invisible Man from Experimental City.
Who's there?” Nate asked.
It is I”
Nate was very confused and a little freaked out, he heard a voice but didn't see anyone, “I who?”
I, the Invisible man.”
You're invisible?”
Yes, that 's what I just said.”
Ok, but what's your name?”
“Not important, just know that I am a man, who is invisible. You rang the bell, what can I do for you?” he addressed Shaun, “Oh it's you! Shaun of the family Rosten right? Did you ever find your horse or whatever?”
It was my friends that were missing.”
Well I see you've found one, although I would probably say he is half a friend, am I right?” The Invisible Man laughed at his own joke, Nate was not as amused.
Look, can you tell us where we are? What's going on, have we made progress in this tower or not?” Nate asked cutting the laughter short.
“Well, aren't we rude? Especially for someone with no eyebrows. Uh, let me see here, I think I have instructions here for you.” He pulled out a piece of paper, as usual seemingly out of thin air, Shaun wondered if he had an invisible bag too.
It says here that you are now in what is called a 'Rest Room' a room where you can get some rest, drink from these potions, the blue one is to replenish magic, the red for health. Every room u pass through is actually taking you up a floor, you are now on the fourth floor. The next Rest Room will be on the Eighth floor, after that there will not be a rest room until the nineteenth floor, so plan accordingly, the potions may not be taken from the room, although you may purchase some from the Mole Merchant Woman, tap on the ground three times to summon her. On the next floor you will find one of your friends and a trap, you must disable it to set your friend free, disabling the trap also unlocks the door. Enjoy your stay in this Rest Room. That is the end of the note, any questions?”
Uh, no, I guess not, you just about answered all of our questions, uh can you tell us what rooms are coming up or any hints about some of the rooms?” Shaun asked.
I don't know a lot about any of this, I was just given this note about an hour ago, again I was summoned to that damned tree, then in here,”
Ok, well, uh thanks.” Shaun said. He sat down near the table and drank from the blue potion, thinking about their next move. Nate took a swig from the red potion and thought about the same thing. Shaun thought they would be ok without buying potions right now, Nate had some and his own endurance for spell casting was pretty high, he had already made it four floors without running too low. Hopefully they would be able to find some money before the next Rest Room to buy some potions just in case. Shaun felt good enough to get going again, and so did Nate, the Invisible Man noticed this and said “All ready? Here is the door, I hope you enjoyed your stay here in Rest Room one, good luck!” A door appeared out of thin air, as if from behind an invisible curtain. Shaun opened the door and stepped through to the next room.
Fifth Floor
It was dark, pitch black, they could only hear what sounded like machinery. Neither one of them made a sound, for fear of an undead horde in the dark like in the first room. The low hum of whatever was there filled the room, Shaun was unsure of what to do. Nate had an idea, he still had what was left of the glasses from the first room, although the fire ball that blew off his eyebrows did break the glasses in half. He took out the lens and held it up to his eye. It didn't do much, he could sort of see, there was a thick fog of darkness just like the last room, but no figures in it, so there was probably no undead, Well, that's a relief he thought. He continued to search, across the room he saw what was making the noise, there was a hole in the ground filled with water, in the water there was a school of fish, but they were all robotic, gnawing away at a wire that Nate followed up to the ceiling where it was attached to an unconscious Sarah.
Shaun! It's Sarah! She's tied up near the roof, there is a small pond or something filled with robotic fish, we gotta save her.”
How can you see all that through the fog?”
“I have what's left of the glasses you broke from the first room”
I broke? How was I supposed to know that there would be a pair of glasses on the floor in front of me in the dark Nate?”
No the other ones, the pair I was wearing when you shot that fireball at me.”
You told me to, and then you didn't get out of the way, so that's your fault”
The familiar sounds of the two bickering woke Sarah up, “Hey, can you guys stop arguing and get me down from here!”
Well maybe if Nate would lead the way being the one with the lens that can see through all this fog”
Nate begrudgingly led the way, when they got closer to Sarah the fog dispersed, Shaun approached the pond and a few of the fish turned their attention to him, trying to jump out and bite him. “Get me down!” Sarah shouted from the ceiling. Nate tried to cut the wire, figuring they could just try and catch Sarah, not the safest plan, but the easiest. The wire would not be cut by Nate's dagger, it may have actually just dulled the blade. Shaun thought it shouldn't be too hard to get rid of the fish and untie the wire from in the pond, he zapped them with a powerful Bolt spell and the fish robots were fried, they sank into the puddle. Shaun then reached his hand into the pond, but he saw a shadow swimming up towards him, he pulled out and saw that it was another school of fish, this time they were bigger. “Ok, so killing them only makes them come back bigger, this could be a problem.” he said, he had another idea, he used an Ice spell to freeze them, they were still technically as alive as fish robots could be, but they sank towards the bottom and he reached his hand in to get the wire undone. Another shadow, they must have gotten free, but this time they were even bigger. Shaun pulled his hand out as one of the fish almost got a hold of it. The robots were now the size of sharks, one more time and they could be large enough to destroy the pond and the room, and Sarah along with it. “Nate, do you see a door anywhere?” Shaun asked, Nate put the lens to his eye and looked around, he found the door, it was on the wall to the right of them, “Over there,” he said. “Ok, I am going to get the robots to cut the wire, I want you to grab Sarah and run for the door, got it?” Nate nodded his head, he readied himself to catch Sarah mid fall. “You guys are crazy! Nate if you let me die, I will haunt the shit out of you!” Sarah yelled from up above. Shaun stuck his hand near the pond to get the robots' attention, they made for him, he put his hand near the wire and moved it just in time for one of the robots to snap the wire in half, Sarah screamed as she fell, praying that Nate would catch her, Shaun fired a Bolt spell at the pond, frying the Sharks, Nate caught Sarah and they all made for the door as fast as they could. They were almost at the door when the floor around the pond crashed open and a giant robotic whale burst through, it was maybe ten feet behind them, not far enough for anyone to turn around. They made it to the door and flung it open, jumping through just in time to not get eaten by the giant metal beast.
Sixth Floor
The three of them lied in a heap on the floor, Sarah was the first one to speak, “Well that was extremely uncomfortable.”
You think that was bad? You should've seen all the crap we went through just to get here! Freakin zombies, some guy doppelganger mother fucker who tried to kill Shaun, chasing a whale!”
Nate, stop overreacting, we made it out of all of those in one piece. We're fine, and we found Sarah, I'm sure she'll be a big help in the rooms ahead.”
Nate felt like he was not overreacting, this place was dangerous, whoever thought this was a good idea was insane. How did he get signed up for this?
Sarah are you ok?” Shaun asked, “Yeah I'm fine, just a bit dazed, where are we?” Nate and Shaun caught them up on the situation. They were not very excited about having to do this for everyone, but they were the ones who were kidnapped so there wasn't much they could do about it. They were so busy explaining everything they hadn't even taken the time to notice what the room was like. It was a technological dump, there were parts to everything from robots, cars and weapons to strollers, mechanical bulls and Air ships. This was Sarah's domain, she left the guys mid explanation to go digging through the garbage, within mere minutes her and her little robot Gina had gathered three large piles. “Sarah, we can't take all this crap, we still have twenty floors to go in the tower.” Shaun told her. “Just give me a second.” She took out a little box from her belt, it emitted a bright blue light and one of the piles shrank and transferred itself to inside the small box. She did the same with two other boxes, the lights red and yellow, respectively. “Ok, just a little longer.” She took off and Shaun and Nate just sat there amazed at her technology, sure they had worked with her for a good couple years, but they had never really seen her in action this way, they never really thought about where the parts for her robots come from, and now they knew. She came back with what looked like a crude shotgun slung over her back, and a few little put together pistols, “Ok, ready, now what?”
Shaun was the first to come out of shock, “uh, we gotta find a key and a door.” Sarah had already found the key apparently, which made this all seem a lot easier. “Oh, uh, ok. Did u see a door by any chance? With the same skull on it?” She took them to the door, this all seemed too easy, Shaun and Nate were waiting for something horrible to happen, a giant robot, or some sort of metal monster. “Uh, Sarah, how did u find all this stuff? Like weren't there any monsters or some sort of obstacle to getting the key?” Shaun asked. “Well yeah, it was just some giant snake made out of parts, as if, I make things like that for fun, it was no trouble at all, plus it gave me all those parts you saw me put in my Cubes.” her answer was so matter of fact that they couldn't really question it. They opened the door and went through to the next room.
Seventh Floor
They entered the room, and there it was again, the darkness. The dark cloud that they couldn't see through, Sarah didn't even have anything that could help, she tried her brightest lights, but nothing broke through it. Something was different about this darkness though, even more than usual. It was cold, there was a chilling breeze through the air. Nate took out the lens and looked around, most of the floor was missing, if they had taken even one step in the wrong direction they would have fallen into a pit of Darkness. “You guys, watch your step, the room is full of huge pits in the ground, follow me” They did as they were told and followed Nate. As they started walking Shaun and Sarah could see where the floor gave way, but it was still too dangerous to try and navigate it without Nate leading the way. Shaun looked over the edge of the floor, the pits were filled with the Darkness as well, there was no telling how far it went, it could have gone on forever what with all the crazy magic going on in this insane place. They were about halfway through when the ground started shaking, they all held on to each other stabilizing themselves, the floor then began to shift and move, as if someone was moving them like tiles. Once the ground stopped moving Nate had to reassess the ground situation, they were surrounded on three sides by pits, and the only land was back the way they came, so they had no choice but to back track. “Nate, we're going the wrong way,” Sarah complained. “Well every other way is a pit, so we have to go this way.” he barked back. They went back towards the beginning of the walk way, and the floors started shifting again. “Ok, they shift every fifteen minutes it seems, so this time Nate, get us across as fast as you can.” “Ok, but we still have to find the key.” Shaun had forgotten the key, luckily at that moment the key was passing them on a tile a little ahead of them, Shaun went after it. As he took a step towards it he realized there was a pit in between him and the key, so he jumped at the last minute and made it to the edge of the tile. It was still sliding into it's place and took Shaun along with it, but as it was getting close to it's destination Shaun saw another tile headed right for him. He climbed up almost getting crushed by the tile, and his robe got caught between the two tiles, he would have to wait for the next shift before moving again. He couldn't see Nate and Sarah. “Can you guys see me?” He yelled out, no response, they probably couldn't hear him either. He waited in silence for the next shift. There was a rumble and the tiles started moving again, he got his robe free and stood up on his tile. It moved back towards where he had come from, but no sign of Nate or Sarah. He searched for some sign of them, or the door. He found a dark stone, it looked like it was made from the same material as the glasses, he held it up to his eye, nothing it was just a dark stone. He broke it in half, and again, and again, until he had a very thin piece of the stone, it was practically a lens itself. He could faintly make out shapes in it, Nate and Sarah were on the other side of the room looking for him. Just as he was about to head over to them he heard the low rumble, the floor started shifting again. He jumped to the next tile, and was taken back over to them. “Hey guys, look what I found!” he held up the key and the new lens. “Shaun, where the hell did u go? We've been looking for you for like three hours!” Nate said angrily. “What? I've only been gone like three shifts, that's 45 minutes tops.”
No, it's been much longer then that, we were starting to get worried.”
I swear I've only been gone three shifts, it must be the darkness making it all seem distorted. I'm here now, and I've got the key, and an extra lens I mad out of a rock, it's not as powerful as the glasses lens, but it's ok. Let's get out of here, have you guys found the door?” Nate showed him where the door was, they waited for the next shift before attempting it. Sarah and Nate had figured out the pattern to the tiles while searching for Shaun, the trek to the door must have only taken five minutes. They reached the door and headed to the next floor.
Eighth Floor
A Rest Room. This one was considerably nicer, large pillows to sit on, a hot meal everything they could have wanted. They sat and ate in hushed glee.
Sarah was the one who broke the silence, “So, how much further is it?”
We are on the eighth floor, there are twenty-six floors altogether, so there are eighteen left.” Shaun told her. She groaned, “There has got to be a quicker way to do this!” A blue light appeared, they all recognized it as one of Guy's time portals, it opened up and Guy stepped out of the light. “Hey guys, so I'm still captured an everything, and I just wanted to know if y'all could hurry the fuck up? I know I'm a time traveler, but I can't really go anywhere if I'm all tied up in that trap, so I was sent back by you guys from the future to tell you about a short cut. Shaun told me to tell Shaun to ask the Invisible Man about a shortcut, whatever that means.”
There is a man here who is invisible.” Said Shaun. “Oh shit really? Can I see him?” Guy excitedly asked.
No Guy, he's invisible, no one can see him.”
Well how are you gonna ask him about a shortcut if you can't see him?”
Because we don't need to see him, we just need to talk to him.”
Well, alright, but I still think I would like to see him.”
Guy, go back to the future, thanks for the tip, we'll come save you as fast as we can.”
Good, cause it was getting boring in there, I even stopped by to visit past me, and we agreed that the waiting was not enjoyable, so I solved the trap and set myself free, he's just waiting up there on the twentieth floor, see ya.” A blue light appeared and Guy left through it. Shaun wondered why he didn't just bring his past self here, if he had already set him free, but decided it was best not to try and ask Guy questions about time travel. But they had a clue, a shortcut, this might just be what they need to get through this damn tower alive. It seemed like the rooms would only get worse from here on out. He whistled, Sarah and Nate looked confused, “The Invisible Man told me to summon him by whistling” he explained. They waited, no sign of any change, but then they heard him. “You rang? Oh hey look you found another one of your friends, do you have a lot of short friends?”
Uh, no, just the two, everyone else is either tall or regular sized,” Nate and Sarah were not amused, “So hey look, I was told to ask about a short cut through here, and I was told to ask you, what can you tell me?”
The Invisible Man was quiet but there were sounds of rustling, as if he was looking for something in his invisible bag, he pulled out the book he had shown Shaun in Experimental City. “It says here that there is a stone that can be found in the Pillars that will warp up to four people to a room of their choosing in the pillar, except the final room. Also, when this warp power is used the stone will need to be recharged by going through the magic between doors, at least two doors. So have you found any rare stones while here?” Shaun remembered the stone he found in the last room, and showed it to the Invisible Man, “Well it looks like you broke it, but there may still be enough magic to get you a couple of floors before it has to recharge.” Nate pulled out his lens and showed it to the Invisible Man, seeing as how it was made from similar material. “Ooh, now this stone has been well taken care of, the problem is that it belongs to a set so it's power is also considerably weak.” Shaun was pissed, a shortcut was with them the entire time, and given to them at the beginning of this whole ordeal and they didn't even know, there was so much needless peril, and all of it could have been avoided if he wouldn't have taken that first step. “Are you kidding me? All that we've been through and we've had this great magical tool with us from room one!?” Shaun yelled. “Hey I didn't know until you showed me the stones, how could you have known? You know now and that's what's important, so decide where you would like to go and the stone can take you there, remember when you use one, you need two rooms to recharge it.” Shaun, Nate, and Sarah talked it out and planned their route, they needed to pick up someone from the tenth floor, someone from the fifteenth, and Guy on the twentieth. They were on the eighth floor now, if they went through to the tenth, then warped to the fifteenth, they could immediately warp to the twentieth. Then go from the Twenty-second floor to the twenty-fifth. Then the final floor, where Death awaited. They discussed that since the stone could only take four people at a time everyone else would wait at one of the Rest Rooms. They agreed on the plan, and set out to the ninth floor.
